I made these several months ago. Naturally the idea comes from Pinterest (but I can’t find an actual link).
Anyway, this craft will take time. Hours of it. But if you’re willing to put in the hours, you will end up with a snazzy pair of wrapped earbuds to give as a gift or keep for yourself. So far, I have not given mine away, and I doubt I ever will.
Supposedly, wrapping your earbuds keeps them from getting all tangled. To be honest, I haven’t noticed a tremendous difference, but I enjoy the added thickness and the added color, so I’m not complaining.
It’s pretty simple to do this. If you grew up knotting friendship bracelets then you are prepared for this moment. All you need to do is the Chinese Staircase knot.
Below are the items you need. I recommend limiting your colors to 2 or 3. You’ll also want clear fingernail polish and, of course, a pair of earbuds.
I would also highly recommend taping the earbuds down to something.
Now let’s get started, shall we?
Make sure you have a brand-new skein of embroidery floss, because depending on the length of the earbuds you will probably use the entire thing. I made the mistake of cutting the floss a certain length and it wasn’t enough.
Tie the floss right beneath the jack of the earbuds. For the sake of simplicity I only use one color below, but tie every color onto the buds below the jack. Double knot and apply the handy dandy nail polish.
Making sure the jack is taped so that it cannot move, start the knot pattern, as shown below:
Make a “four” with the thread ALWAYS going over the earbuds (and any other colors), and ALWAYS making a forward “four.”
Then go under the wire and through the “four.”
Pull tight. But not too tight…
And continue doing the same steps over and over. When you wish to change colors, simply switch to the different thread.
When you get to the split, you’ll most likely need to tie off the floss and start two separate “staircases.” Always double knot and always use the polish.
It will take a long time. But the results are worth the hours, and if you’re doing it as a gift, your friend or family member will love it.
