The dollar store. A place full of cheap stuff that will break after a week of use. As a kid, it’s where my brothers and I did our Christmas shopping. My parents loved those gifts! While the general consensus is true – that dollar stores don’t carry quality goods – there are some gems within the aisles.
Below are the few items I’ve discovered at Dollar Tree:
1. Nail Polish
I’ve never been one to dish out $8 for a bottle of nail polish; I get bored with one color too quickly. But surprisingly, the dollar store brand has the same coating ability as nail polish more than 3 times its price. On occasion I’ve even seen Dollar Tree carry Sallie Hansen’s Diamond Strength® nail polish, though the price runs higher in department stores and drug stores.
There certainly aren’t as many color choices, but if you only have a buck it’s a good place to go. How does the dollar store brand nail polish compare to others? I’m working on a post that compares different nail polishes. Stay tuned!
2. Greeting Cards
I have a budget for gifts, and I hate having to allocate some of that money towards a greeting card. Often times I give the gift sans a card, but it feels unfinished. And while a handmade card is more appreciated and thoughtful, gathering the supplies can be just as expensive if you make quality cards. I started buying the value cards at the grocery store until I discovered the selection at the dollar store. Either a dollar or fifty cents, there’s a greeting card for every occasion, and the content of the cards is comparable to the greetings in higher-priced cards.
I love to light candles and fill my house with their pleasing aromas, but I can’t afford to buy a big one for $25, and I just can’t talk myself into paying $5 for a small one when I can drive to the dollar store and pick one up for a buck. Now, the reason candle brands like Yankee Candle™ cost so much is because the product is of good quality, and in the end, the price is worth it. But when you don’t have the money, you don’t have the money. So I settle for a dollar store candle, and I’m not disappointed. Once again there aren’t as many choices, but if you’re not picky about your smells, there are some decent ones to choose from.
4. Pregnancy Tests
I can’t claim this discovery as my own. But it’s so good that I have to bring attention to it. I didn’t realize the value of a dollar store pregnancy test until I read this blog post. I highly recommend reading it and researching the accuracy comparisons that the blogger provides.
These are just the ones I’ve found so far. As I compare more, I’ll be writing another blog post with more of these finds. Hope it helped! Now go out and save some money.
